Does an Employer Charge for a Prospective Employee Criminal Background Check?

There have been some cases lately where an individual applying for an employment position has found that a background check would be required for the position and that they will be required to pay for it. In todays cash strapped world, it is understandable that some applicants would question whether it should be their responsibility to pay for an employee criminal background check or whether the company should be responsible for bearing the costs of the background check. Unfortunately, more and more companies are passing the cost of their employee criminal background checks onto the applicants when they apply for a position with the company. If the employee refuses to pay for the background check, it is considered the same as refusing to consent to a background check and the person will be disqualified from employment. So why do some companies choose to require that the applicant pay for the employee criminal and financial background check services? Some professionals believe that this is a way for the companies to ensure that only people that are serious about the position and can pass a background check will pay for the background check to stay in the running for the position, thereby saving the company time, energy, and money by weeding out undesirable applicants.
